Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:9-10
My daily study today brought me to one of my favorite chapters of Proverbs: 9 the chapter on wisdom. Until today though I had never really pondered these verses, took time to get in depth into them. I’m glad I finally did and that I really took time to consider wisdom, how to be wise, what it means.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. Proverbs 9:9
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Matthew 13:12
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28:28
Of course these weren’t the only verses on wisdom, a few others I was drawn to are below.
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; Proverbs 1:2-3
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: Proverbs 1:5
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Proverbs 2:2
Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known. Proverbs 14:33
The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. Proverbs 15:33
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. Psalms 111:10
There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. Proverbs 21:30
And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. Isaiah 33:6
Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, and that hear thy wisdom. 1 Kings 10:8
My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. Psalms 49:3
For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Luke 21:15
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:19-21
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:5
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16
The Word has a lot to say about wisdom, but I think most important is that the beginning of it is fear of the Lord. Now that doesn’t mean shaking and quaking in terror or dread; but awe, reverence, respect. Second is that we have to apply our hearts unto it. We have to let it work on us from the inside, the same as we let Jesus work on us and change us. When we do these we will be happy men, happy servants of God!
