Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Romans 13:1
In studying Daniel a couple weeks ago I was struck by how many times he mentions that God is truly in control of the schemes of man and that as such we are to submit to the rulers and leaders he appoints over us. It got me to thinking about other verses dealing with God’s appointment of the powers that be in this world. Particularly the verse from Romans above. I love the wording of it, be subject unto the higher powers… the powers that be are ordained of God. Think of it, the God of heaven, creation, life is in control of ALL things, even the powers that be in this world. None come to power outside his will, and he uses all to bring about his purposes.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: Romans 13:2-3
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. 1 Peter 2:13-17
I admit I struggle with the two verses above, there are certain things that I am not sure I could submit to if forced. Like denying my God, killing someone, or breaking any of the other Big 10. I’ve prayed a lot about this though and am always reminded that God’s law trumps man’s so I will side with God – respectfully so though. I will refuse with dignity and respect that my testimony in doing so still honors the ruler while fearing and obeying God.
And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: Daniel 2:21
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. Daniel 4:17
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will. Daniel 5:21
Even that old adversary the Devil is subject to God’s will. We see numerous times that he is given permission by God to act, or is rebuked and forbidden to have his way.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Job 1:7 and And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. Job 1:12
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zechariah 3:2
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. Luke 4:35
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
Knowing this we can rest secure knowing that God’s got this, that he is truly the only Higher Power, everyone else is just playacting like a child.
