In the following passage from 1 Corinthians we have a powerful promise as believers, and a stern warning for those who are perishing, with their eyes blinded by the scales of disbelief. All they see his their desire for anything other than the truth of God, for wisdom, signs, logic, science, but never the Truth.
For the word of the cross is to them that are perishing foolishness; but unto us which are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18
Aye, that it is, the power of God! God who set the planets spinning, ordered the stars upon their paths, who breathed the breath of life into Adam the man He formed from the very dust of the earth He created. God who literally spoke the Light into being, that’s power!
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the prudence of the prudent will I reject. 1 Corinthians 1:19
The wisdom of the wise, prudence of the prudent – those are tricky words. Wisdom and prudence sound like good things until you realize that they are good only when pursued through righteousness, not through vanity, pride, and rebellion. When the wisdom sought after is Gods wisdom imparted to us by the Holy Spirit then it is solid wisdom, true and pure, like wise prudence when sought after in service to the Lord is good. But when man seeks these things for his own glorification, not Gods, and his own benefit then they are sinful, vile.
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 1 Corinthians 1:20
God will show those who are vainly wise, proud, rebellious that it is they who are foolish, not the people of God who walk by faith, who trust and know Him personally through the relationship He has with them through His Holy Spirit!
For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21
We can not rely on man and this world, sin cursed as it now is, to reveal wisdom to us but God in His infinite wisdom knows this so He reveals himself to those who seek Him, who opens their hearts and minds to hear the preaching of the Gospel, the Truth – it is God’s good pleasure to see souls turn to Him, to ask His Son to accept them and forgive them of their sins that He might be glorified.
Seeing that Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom: 1 Corinthians 1:22
The Jews are always seeking, their eyes blinded by what they think they know, by their false wisdom, always needing signs, proof, never just trusting to walk in faith and know in their hearts the truth. For if they just place their faith in Jesus and trust God then they will know that they have faith in the only truth and they will be saved. The Greeks also are may obtain salvation when they stop seeking after man’s wisdom instead seeking out God and Jesus and true wisdom.
but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Gentiles foolishness; 1 Corinthians 1:23
But instead of seeking Truth the Jews and Greeks alike cling to man’s wisdom, man’s signs causing the Gospel to become a stumblingblock, foolishness in the eyes of the world and it’s own.
but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24
Ah, but there is hope, some of both Jew and Greek will hear, will believe, will find their faith. They will come to know Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God as well.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Corinthians 1:25
For ever God’s foolishness is wiser than all man’s so called wisdom, He is all knowing, all powerful stronger even in his weakness than man in all his strength.
For behold your calling, brethren, how that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 1 Corinthians 1:26
We are warned to beware the ways and things of this world for not many who are wise after the flesh, after man’s wisdom, not many who think themselves mighty, noble will be called. Instead they will be some of the ones who cry out in anguish at the final judgement when they hear the Lord say “Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity, I never knew you.”
but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong; 1 Corinthians 1:27
Because they foolishly deny truth seeking instead after fables and stories God uses the foolish, silly things of the world they so love to shame and rebuke those who seek it’s offerings as opposed to truth.
and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, yea and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: 1 Corinthians 1:28
Not only will God use the foolish things of the world to shame those who seek the world but He chose them from the beginning, the foolish things of this world that He might use them to His purpose.
that no flesh should glory before God. 1 Corinthians 1:29
To show Himself King of kings and Lord of lords before all flesh that none may glory before the Creator, the Alpha and Omega, the First and Last.
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: 1 Corinthians 1:30
But we believers we are in Christ Jesus, who was wade wisdom from God, and through Him we are righteous, sanctified, redeemed. Praise the Lord! We are saved through the power and blood of Christ the very Lamb of God who took our place, who received upon Himself my sin, your sin, the world’s sin. What a heavy burden, what a bitter cup Christ drank for us as His Father bade Him do.
that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:31
But one day they will believe, hopefully before it is eternally too late! One day every eye shall see Him, every head shall bow and knee shall bend as the entire world recognizes their King, sadly, for many they will recognize Him too late when He returns as the Conquering King to establish His millennial kingdom. We must do all we can now to help the blind to see, now while they still have time to know the truth. That all are sinners, unworthy of God, deserving of the just punishment of death for breaking God’s laws, and that God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to become a sinless perfect man who could pay our debt, accept death for us, in our stead. Jesus took on the full cup of wrath, spilling over with the vile iniquities of our sins and drank every drop of it, His precious blood was poured out in suffering as he was beaten, tortured till till His very bones were laid open for all to see before being crucified among true criminals, just as He said it would happen. He was laid in a cold, dark tomb that was then sealed and guarded only to rise from the grave, defeating death for all eternity on the third day! Because He lives we have the hope of eternity with Him, because He paid our debt to God, He gave his life for us but took it up again the first fruits of the dead. As believers we have this hope and we must share it with a blind, dying, doomed world.
