We are looking at chapter 6 today and it’s about to get real guys. Things on earth start to go really “pear shaped” as my son says. When the first seal opens the first of 21 increasingly severe judgements begins to pass on the people left behind on earth after the rapture of the true church. I am going to approach the rest of the book laying it out in the timeline I think it occurs; for the most part that will agree with Pastor Locke’s videos but if my thoughts differ from his remember the timing is not a doctrinal issue, seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance through Scripture on it. You should be doing that on everything anyway, never just take my word on a matter search Scripture daily testing what a matter is. Let’s get going now.
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. Revelation 6:1
Remember who this Lamb is, Jesus, God’s Son, God in fleshly form. That means that no matter how jacked up and crazy things get that God is in complete and total control. And praise God I am gonna be watching from above cause the church and thus the restrainer are removed before the Lamb even takes the scroll.
Now you know what is restraining him, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way.
2 Thessalonians 2:6-7
One of the 4 creatures tells John with a thunderous loud voice to “come and see” which leads me to believe we will all be able to see what’s happening on earth from the throne room of God.
And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. Revelation 6:2
I know some say this is Jesus based on the fact that at the end of the great Tribulation in 7 years He shows up on a white horse and He will be wearing crowns. When we carefully compare the two verses they certainly seem to be two different individuals though, one trying to be a pitiful imitation of the True King who will come to justly conquer at the end. I believe this rider is the antichrist, not Christ.
I saw the heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it is called Faithful and True. In righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has names written and a name written which no one knows but he himself. He is clothed in a garment sprinkled with blood. His name is called “The Word of God.” The armies which are in heaven followed him on white horses, clothed in white, pure, fine linen. Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the wine press of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty. He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:11-16
And behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer. Revelation 6:2
The first seal rider has an empty bow, symbolizing the false peace he will offer to Israel, not a two-edged sword; one crown not many; and is actually who the Word of God conquers and slays. Notice in 19 it is made very clear who the rider is, in 6 it is just a weak imitation, the antichrist who tries to mimic all the true Christ has done and will do. But while Christ is love, truth, justice and holy; the AC is the opposite, kinda like a dollar store knock off of a knock off of the real thing.
I mentioned his empty bow a bit ago, that’s important to note. He will come under a false peace; allowing the Jews to rebuild the temple and begin sacrifices again; and for while it will hold, then about 3 1/2 years in he is gonna commit the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel.
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:24-27
Let’s look at this passage from Daniel briefly. The seventy weeks are weeks of years so each week is 7 years, this is explained in a different passages of scripture which for the sake of not confusing you I won’t go into right here. We know that from Cyrus’ decree to rebuild Jerusalem until Jesus was crucified there was exactly 69 weeks or 483 years. Then God stopped the prophetic clock so to speak, with one week of years still to go, Daniel’s seventieth week. He then began dealing with the church which was conceived at Pentecost 50 days after Jesus rose from the tomb, and will end when the church is raptured to be with Him. This is the time we are living in right now, known as the church age or age of grace. When it ends then the weeks of years begin again and the final 7 to make an end to sin, during which this coming prince will confirm a covenant with Israel for peace then 3 1/2 he causes sacrifices to end and commits the abomination of desolation also spoken of in Matthew and Mark.
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Matthew 24:15
When he does this and declares himself to be God, then he takes that peace from the world and kicks off the Great Tribulation. This will also usher in the opening of the remaining seals at the halfway point and the start of the time referred to by Jesus as the Great Tribulation.
When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come!” Another came out, a red horse. To him who sat on it was given power to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another. There was given to him a great sword. Revelation 6:3-4
All 4 horses have the same rider, the AC who just took the false peace away when he desecrated the Jewish temple and showed his true colors. Now he is given a great sword and he causes all the peoples of the earth to kill one another. Wars are gonna break out both large and small; nation against nation, neighbor against neighbor. There is going to major loss of life. Interestingly though this will also tie up the AC’s attention long enough for the Jewish believers, who will have been converted by either the two witnesses in Jerusalem or one of the 144,000 sealed Jewish evangelists world-wide, to flee to the wilderness where we know they will be protected by God for the remaining 42 of the Tribulation. We will cover these events in more detail as we come to them in their chapters. Revelation is not written in exactly chronological order, most of it is but in each of the three sets of judgements there is a break for a parenthetical chapter or 3 between the 6th and 7th judgements. The 144,000 sealed comes in the next chapter, the witnesses in chapter 11. I think Jesus showed it to John this way for a couple reasons; one to develop the details and roles of certain key players in this final 7 years before Jesus returns to earth to reign for 1000 years. The other I think is to give John and all who read it a break to sort of process what’s just happened, it’s a lot to take in and process for sure.
When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come and see!” And behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a balance in his hand. I heard a voice in the middle of the four living creatures saying, “A choenix of wheat for a denarius, and three choenix of barley for a denarius! Don’t damage the oil and the wine!” Revelation 6:5-6
One of the consequences of the world being at war will be famines, food shortages, inflation, etc. I find it interesting that the oil and wine are spared though, that implies luxuries will be able to be had for a price. This brings even more loss of life.
When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see!” And behold, a pale horse, and he who sat on it, his name was Death. Hades followed with him. Authority over one fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, with death, and by the wild animals of the earth was given to him. Revelation 6:7-8
The final horseman is also the final result of the other 3, death on a global scale. In fact 1/4th of the people left on earth after the rapture of believers will die during these first 4 seals. Right now the world has around 7.5 billion people in it, say 1.5 billion get raptured that leaves 6 billion at the start of Daniel’s 70th week, which means that of those 6 billion another 1.5 billion get killed by the horsemen leaving 4.5 billion alive to face the remaining 17 judgements.
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the Word of God, and for the testimony of the Lamb which they had. Revelation 6:9
This seal is a little different as it doesn’t show a direct action on the world but implies what is to come. John sees under the altar the souls of those slain for the Gospel, the testimony of the Lamb. I believe this to be the old testament saints who believed by faith in a Messiah they had never seen and prophets through John the baptist as well as all the martyrs since Stephen.
They cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Revelation 6:10
Look at what they cry, “And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. Revelation 6:2” At first glance this seems kinda like they are whining until you look closely at what they are saying. They are crying for the holy and just God they died serving to avenge their blood that was shed for their faith so that by the judging God will be glorified.
A long white robe was given to each of them. They were told that they should rest yet for a while, until their fellow servants and their brothers, who would also be killed even as they were, should complete their course. Revelation 6:11
They receive robes as the raptured saints did and are told to wait a bit until their brothers and fellow believers that will be martyred during the persecution of believers during the last half of Daniel’s 70th week or the great Tribulation join them. The martyrs are special to God it seems and are not part of the 1st resurrection of the dead in Christ that occurs at the time of the rapture.
I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became as blood. Revelation 6:12
The sixth seal is a hard one, real hard. There will be a great earthquake; and when he says great he means like worldwide, crazy, earth shaking kinda quake. The sun is going to go black likely from all the smoke and debris the quake shakes up or from an eclipse and the moon will look like blood. This prophecy is also found in Joel and Matthew, Mark, and Luke reference it as well.
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. Joel 2:31
And as if that’s not enough things are just getting started.
The stars of the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when it is shaken by a great wind. Revelation 6:13
Now stars here doesn’t mean stars as in stars of the Mazzaroth but shooting stars, meteorites, small like figs. These will do damage but not anything like the 75 lb. meteors that will fall at the end of the great Tribulation.
The sky was removed like a scroll when it is rolled up. Every mountain and island were moved out of their places. Revelation 6:14
I told you it was big, this great quake is gonna move islands and mountains outta their places, it’s going to be catastrophic really. I think that it’s such a mega-quake volcanoes will be triggered, and just the massive amount of debris the quake and meteorites trigger will cause such a massive dust cloud that it will roll across the sky and make it look like it was removed. It’s gonna be bad folks, praise God we don’t have to be here for it. You’d think this kinda crazy would get to people repent and turn to God but most will just continue rejecting the truth as we see in the last verses.
The kings of the earth, the princes, the commanding officers, the rich, the strong, and every slave and free person, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains. They told the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of his wrath has come; and who is able to stand?” Revelation 6:15-17
Look at all the people listed here, it covers everyone, starting with kings and world leaders and going all the way down to slaves and free people. That phrasing slave and free person sounds weird to us, but it is possible that under the antichrists world system that slavery of some sort will be reintroduced. Actually it still exists all over the world today in the form of sex trafficking and enslavement; not to mention that it still exists in many non-western cultures.
What all these people in the earth do seems nuts to me considering what’s going on, I mean it’s only the biggest earthquake in the world since Noah’s day when the great fountains of the deep opened up, they’re like let’s go hid in this cave in the earth as it’s rocking and rolling. Then they start screaming and crying out for the rocks and all to fall on them, that seems so insane to me but when we read that last line it begins to make sense.
“Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of his wrath has come; and who is able to stand?” Suddenly, they see who is in real control, they know God is sovereign and sits on His throne in heaven. They also know that Jesus is the Lamb and His day of wrath has come and none but believers will survive. They know truth, but what do they do about it? Hide in rocks and caves hoping to die.
This is a future event prophesied almost 2,000 years ago, Jesus is going to open those seals one day and when He does He pours out His wrath on a denying and dying world trying desperately one final time to get them to repent of their sins, their denial and rejection, turn to Him and Him alone and believe with all their hearts that He died for them on the cross and rose the third day so that all who believe in Him might be saved from an eternity of hell and have eternal life with Him, restored to God, redeemed. He is trying to save a depraved, sinful world in the only way it understands, sadly for most they will just shake their fist in His face and continue to wallow and die in their beloved sins.
There’s good news though, you don’t have to go through this period at all, no one does. You can repent of your sins today and ask Jesus to accept you, cleanse you of your sins. Tell Him you know He died for you, that your only hope of salvation is through the precious blood He shed for you, that you want Him to lead your life and fill you with the Holy Spirit. Thank Him then turn from your sin and begin to live for Him. It’s that simple and that hard, sin is hard to shake but with Christ all things are possible.
